Starting that year, he did nothing but write. Half truth half fiction totally unnerving. Modiano never reconciled himself to his father’s actions. It also has this almost vilanelle-like repetition of phrases. Apparently one his major themes, Wikipedia calls it an “obsession,” dee the German occupation of France during World War Two and how French citizens came to terms with it. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. He is a collaborator, a traitor, an almost-patriot–he’s whatever anyone wants him to be.
The book is deeply about identity. I rather think this characterless, faceless narrator, because he has no moral compass, is equally evil. BlackOxford rated it it was ok Apr 16, Lists with This Book. First we learn of the Khedive, then we hear of the Lieutenant.
Feels like he is finding his style with this lla, more refined with a bit less showing off finding that hypnotic dream like feeling.
In this story it is a nameless 20 year old male navigating the world of two rival groups of French citizens who are doing what they must in order to survive.
The narrator becomes a double agent as he tries to be a patriot without Once again Modiano has recreated the atmosphere of Nazi occupied Paris in WWII.

View all 16 comments. Adding to dr confusion is the lack of a continuity in time. He must simply make whatever decisions he thinks will keep him alive the longest. More novella than novel it tells the story of a man who seems to be part of a gang of criminals who are both collaborating by arresting patriotic Frenchmen while stealing as much as they can from the houses of those who have fled the Germans.

There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Film Noir and Apocalyptic Anxiety. But Modiano created him so he must know him even if he pretends not to. Eventually one of the major criminals becomes the police lieutenant and this makes the main character’s double agent act – as well as the functions of the police and crime – even more confusing.

He won’t understand the first thing about this story. Lots of talking heads with exotic names making disconnected remarks. However, unlike most men in this situation in and around world war 2, the narrator isn’t particularly loyal to either side. All those faces should be preserved, engagements kept, promises upheld. I walked out instantly. It is dense with a lot of characters, but for me a fast read.
