Perfect poin fans of Sliding DoorsKasie West’s ppint novel Pivot Point follows a girl with the power to see her potential futures. Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?

So when her parents tell her they are getting a divorce and she has to pick who she wants to live with, a Search has never been more important. In one future Addie is living with her mom in the life she’s always known and is being pursued by the most popular guy in school. In the other she is the new girl in school, where she falls for a cute, quiet artist.

Then Addie finds herself drawn into a murder investigation, and her fate takes a darker turn. With so much to lose in either future, Addie must decide which reality she’s willing to live through. Gr 8 Up-Growing up in Compound, a secret facility where people with paranormal abilities reside, Addison Coleman knows no other life until her parents divorce and she has to decide whether to stay with her mother in Compound or move to Texas with her father and live in a world filled with Normals.

Addison’s talent is that of a Divergent, the ability to see into the future and determine which path she should take. With the help of her best friend, sest looks forward six weeks and uncovers not only the chance of finding love in both futures, but also the possibility that danger, secrets, and obsession may destroy the lives of those she cares about the most.

West has created an intricately woven story of two possible futures, with chapters that alternate between Addie’s choices-to stay or to leave. Initially, the two plotlines are fairly divergent, but as the climax builds, the characters and stories begin to merge and the two worlds overlap. This debut novel, while not breaking new ground in the loint field of paranormal teen fiction, will appeal to those who enjoy the genre, and it is a welcome change from vampires and zombies.

What would happen if you could see into the future and then choose the better of two options?

Pivot Point Series

Addie Coleman has this ability. She is a Searcher living in the Compound, the southern Texas home of the most gifted individuals in the country.

When her parents decide to divorce, with her mother staying in the Compound, and her father opting to live in the normal world, she decides to use her ability to help her choose with whom to live.

In alternating chapters, West lays out each scenario. In one Addie stays in the Compound and falls in love with Duke Rivers, the star quarterback. In the other she lives in the normal world with her father and again falls in love, but this time with Trevor, also a quarterback, who has been intentionally injured by Compound players. West takes a rather predictable yet intriguing premise and infuses it with a conclusion that will surprise and please the romantic teen reader.

Pivot Point is one of those novels that really sticks with you. I finished it a month or two ago, but find myself thinking about it quite often. When I first picked it up I was worried that the dual timelines would be confusing, but they weren’t.

I was easily able to follow along with both timelines and while I enjoyed one more than the other, I thought both were extremely well written.

I used to absolutely love paranormal YA, but lately it’s been so inundated with mediocre and bizarre crap that I’ve been leaning more towards character driven contemporary stuff instead. Kasie West has done a great job here of writing something that is in the paranormal genre, but is so focused on the characters that the paranormal part is more of a sub-plot instead of being the main focus.

Addie is our heroine and she can see the future, sort of. When given a choice, Addie can see where each one will lead and it gives her the opportunity to pick which one she thinks is better. The majority of the novel follows Addie living out each choice in alternating chapters.

Each choice comes with some devastating consequences and following Addie as she figures things out and makes some really tough decisions is actually really fun. I love nothing more than being kept up until 3am finishing a novel, or reading at stoplights and in lines at the store because I HAVE to know what happens next. Pivot Point is one of those books! The pacing is phenominal – I never got bored. I never found myself skimming as I do in so many other books.

Great debut novel by a new author! Definitely check this one out! I truly admire these paranormal books where I get completely lost within the pages and feel like the events are something that could actually happen in real life. I couldn’t put this down and would have stayed up till the crack of dawn if I didn’t have to have a few hours of rest to start the next day.

I don’t believe I would have survived the wait between this book and the release of Split Second and I’m so happy I didn’t find out about this series until both books are already released. I love the way the story was told. I was so worried when we first met Duke and then later Trevor is introduced. I felt so torn on which path to choose but something kept nagging me about one of these guys and I was pretty much convinced which team I was on after Chapter But of course, I just knew what was going to be the major deciding point for Addie and it’s basically what I love about this book.

Aside from all the cute swoony romance, of course! I seriously want to reread this series again. I’m still left thinking about this fictional world and feel like I actually lived in it.

: Pivot Point (): Kasie West: Books

Casey Carlisle Top Contributor: She is relatable to an extent, though I did feel as though she was a bit flaky and tended to go with the flow a fair amount in both futures. I was also a little annoyed how it looked like she needed to have a boyfriend to feel whole, and normal. Laila is a cool best friend. The reveal to his character is fantastic.

I pretty much had him pegged straight away, but still managed to be surprised with the twists in the plot. Adorkable through and through. But Trevor shows a vulnerable and committed side which completely broke down my walls as it did with Addie and I was really rooting for this coupling.

A really wonderful story that unfolds masterfully, though did feel slow for the first two thirds. I would kasid like to have seen the characters have more flaws and not so physically perfect. I do like how certain events were unavoidable. I would have rated it higher if not for the pacing and physical tropes of the characters.

Pivot Point

Loved all the different characters though probably a bit too many and how both versions of the future intertwine, like getting two different POVs of a single event.
