Zoe is a great character, smart, witty, acerbic at times, but very likeable.

I think “John Scalzi” is actually a teenage girl who’s too smart for her own good. Really, it was kind of a pain in the ass. My issue with the book is that it is “only” a companion novel to the last book in the series. Writing it twice under two different titles. The Obin worshiped him, but he was killed for being a traitor to humankind and wanting to overthrow the Colonial Union.
It tells exactly the same story and therefore it has zero tension. Worst of the series so far A player and a pawn in a interstellar chess match to save humanity, or to see it fall. Much in the same way that reading Harry Potter for the first time right now wouldn’t have the same impact as when I read them as a child.
