Later, her definitions and examples of eegoismo don’t seem appropriate when attempting to explain the alleged immorality of an altruistic approach. I’d be fine without the bits by Branden. I suspect this happened because Rand was very much the sort of systematizing thinker who runs things out to their logical conclusions.

Her fiction mostly reflects her philosophy. That is something I don’t feel other reviewers understand, this book is not an incredibly polished magnum opus, it is a collection of short analysis from an objectivist perspective. She is a true intellectual. Welfare has become unwieldy, clumsy, massive and ineffective.
No one gets a free ride or special treatment. Unlike her other works this time we have representation of her views in a more precise essayistic form. But one thing that is unflinching in my belief is the power of community. Interesting read for anyone who’s into a bit raciobal psychology behind various political standpoints. Serious scholars can still learn a lot about the Objectivist position towards various questions, but partisans or the unconvinced probably won’t get racionall much out of The Virtue of Selfishness.

Her gushing about the perfectness of capitalism and sanctity and ingenuity all thing American is unrealistic, ridiculous, in fact given that she was a cold war refugee, poor yet ambitious and probably at a high risk of being ostracized and marginalized in capitalist America, raises doubts as to whether her extolling of all thing American as divine was not in itself a survival ruse.

While I can’t say that Rand is all that good of a novelist, she is quite good at the sort of writing she does here: Adaptadores, Cabos e Fontes. Fundamental is the balance that you neither surrender yourself, nor sacrifice others. But Ayn Rand’s unwavering statism, regardless of the fact that it contradicts the basic principles of individualism, is a betrayal to the rest of the book. Therefore I happened to have this pdf file in Chinese, so i read all at once, non-stop. Basically, individually every person must act rationally in order to survive.

Conversely, that there is nothing more selfless that pure selfishness because by being true to yourself you contruibute the most I abhor her overzealous approach to capitalism; however I find it fascinating to see that when she focuses this same mentality away from money rannd towards interpersonal interactions, it becomes palatable.
I enjoyed the book.
Perhaps worst of all, though, is the idea that egoizmo sense of humor about oneself–any form of self-deprecating wit, or sign of humility–is somehow a betrayal of one’s very soul. To value selfishness but to remonstrate against hedonism and subjective utility – from some assumed point ranc view of an impartial spectator – is an Objectivist’s paradox par excellence. That said, I feel like Ayn Rand and I are defining the word socialism differently, as the bulk of what she criticizes it for is exactly the same thing that I criticize capitalism for.
