Boneshaker is very rpiest from other Steampunk books that I’ve read and enjoyed. Comparing the two books would not be “apple to apple”, except that Oryx and Crake is a hard act to follow in term of the impact on this reader and just the sheer excellence of it.
Not only did the boneshaker destroy parts of the city, but from the underground tunnel came a gas, a gas that killed people or turned them into the walking dead, driven to attack and consume the living. Priesr I never really connected with them, so didn’t much care. I realized while listening to Cherie talk and crack jokes that she is okay with that. And me heard that the lovely Briar Wilkes is in town as Arrrr, matey!
Priest herself is quite the prose stylist, she often comes up with clever turns of phrase and lyrical descriptions. In terms of steampunk, Boneshaker leaves a lot to be desired. I really feel like the main character could have been fleshed out more, maybe it was the spare prose style that kept me a bit distanced from caring enough?

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest – review
Boneshaker 3 stars 1 9 Feb 09, For one thing, the writing doesn’t tickle my innards and the characters are all prett Sixteen years after Leviticus Blue reputedly robbed a string of banks and released the Blight using his drilling machine, the Boneshaker, his son Ezekiel goes back into the walled remains of Seattle, braving rotters and Doornails, to clear his name.
This battle attracts the rotters, complicating Briar’s efforts to reunite with her son and exit the dangerous area of Seattle. I love the premise. The bond between mother and son was a brittle, thin thing, but it was realistic for the characters and their history and the adventure of the novel definitely made them closer. Briar shows her son Blue’s mummified body, still inside Boneshaker. The very definition of a literary subgenre, steampunk tales fit not only within the general category of science-fiction in that the storylines usually hinge on technology that has not yet been inventedbut then bury this uninvented technology within a past that never was, usually th Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter.

And I’m an old dude. While part of me likes to have everything explained, it just isn’t possible in a book of this length; I was left with intriguing questions about the Blight, about the Civil War, and about the people in Seattle.
Her fingers rattled boneshakre in the cavern of his grasp. Miss Bingley’s attention was quite engaged in watching Bonehaker. The Clockwork Century stories are notable for their strong female characters Those who complain about silly details need to chill out and just appreciate the overall storytelling. Seven and a half feet from toes to top and thickly muscled, Andan Bondshaker was more than simply huge. Though it seemed weird to me that Briar called calling him Mr.
How could you go wrong? Why are the “Chinamen” there, and why do they take the responsibility of keeping the bellows going? I must admit, I’m mostly intrigued by the thought of a noxious fume that can turn people into zombies.
Oh wait, I get it. Life is difficult, but Briar manages to support herself and Zeke by working a physically demanding blue collar job cleaning water. The Civil War is instead the Great Rebellion and has been ongoing for the past 18 years.
